MEET THE READING SPECIALIST
Mrs. Aura Volz
Welcome to AES Reading!
My name is Aura Volz and I am very excited to work at Atholton Elementary School! I have worked in Carroll County and Howard County as both a classroom teacher and reading specialist since 1999. I began my career as a third grade teacher and quickly learned of my love for teaching reading. I transferred to Howard County and earned my Masters Degree in Reading at Western Maryland College in 2004. I have been an elementary reading specialist ever since. I love everything about my job: the kids; big and small, the staff, and the community!
I work to strengthen your child’s reading skills through directed practice in an extra reading class or session. Some days I will work with a small group in my own classroom for less distractibility or to administer assessments and others I will remain in your child's classroom and work closely with multiple groups. I will be planning with your child’s teacher so that we can devise the best strategies to ensure progress. Please don't hesitate to email or call me with any questions you may have about your child's reading program and/or developmental level.
One of the most important things your child can do to improve his/her reading skills is to simply spend time reading outside of school. The old saying of practice makes perfect is as true for reading as it is for football or playing an instrument. Find a book or series that motivates your child and provide them a plethora of opportunities to read!
